News from PETA Asia

I read about this article from Dr Chan's blog. Read on the find out the disgusting truth that has been on going in the Philipines.

PETA Asia has just blown the lid off a horrifying and heartbreaking case in the Philippines that involves cruelty to two of the most vulnerable members of any society—children and animals. You will need a strong stomach to read on, but please know that for the first time in history, something is being done about what you are about to read:

For the last year, PETA's affiliate in Asia has been working to expose and stop those behind a series of pornographic snuff videos in which girls as young as 12 are videotaped torturing and killing animals. These "crush" videos depict the girls stepping, standing, and stomping on animals—from the smallest of mice to large dogs—and are made for a niche market of demented individuals all over the world who derive sexual pleasure from watching animals being abused and slowly killed. Such videos are so heinous that the U.S. enacted a federal law to ban their sale just last year.

The content of the videos associated with this case in the Philippines is beyond sickening. They show scantily clad young girls in high heels crushing puppies, cutting the ears from screaming rabbits who are then set ablaze, driving a sharp stiletto heel repeatedly into a monkey's eyes, and other scenes that are so disturbing that I will spare you the details. The abuse of these animals is prolonged as their limbs are broken and organs crushed until they bleed from the eyes and finally succumb to the agony. But please keep reading.

A happy and less timid Coral

Coral has been with us since end of last year. She was very timid and lifeless even after a few months.
~ Coral in Nov 2010 ~
In the first month, Coral rarely stepped out of her hiding spot ( inside this huge cage donated by a kind samaritan ). She don’t mix with other furry frens and cower in fear when most of us try to go near her.

Coral finally built enough courage to venture out of her hiding spot but was still looking joyless.

A True Story to Share

We recently came across this article entitled “ A Teary Mother Bear Killed Her Baby and Committed Suicide- A Heart Breaking True Story”.

We have decided to share this story though it’s not related to Dogs/Cats but still very much relevant if looked from “caring about animal welfare” perspective.

The story brought tears to our eyes and lumps to our throats, for we simply cannot comprehend the amount of suffering humans are capable of inflicting upon other fellow living beings. All in the name of money-making. This is a story about how bears are kept in cages for years and their biles extracted.

Updates on Abused Puppy

You all may recall a post about an abused 2 –month- old puppy that we posted a couple of days ago. He is now under MDDB’s care and has been named Napoleon. Below is a post by MDDB on his progress (we are sharing it here as an update to all our readers)

PLEASE PRAY FOR PUPPY'S SURVIVAL

At the clinic today

This poor little puppy rescued by Mr Chong in Kepong is currently under our care. It was brought to our panel clinic by Mr Chong today and we admitted the puppy. After examining the pup, our vet told us that about 40 % of its tissue is exposed and if left like that the puppy will probably die within a few days.

Updates on the abused puppy

Mr Chong sent the pup to Ara Ampang Vet on Sunday and he has deposited RM300. Mr Chong, Brando and our Paws Mission volunteer have visited the pup and spoke to Dr Sugu to find out more about the pup. According to Dr Sugu, the little pup is around 2 months old and the burn is actually fresh wound which is around 1~2 days old. Puppy is in pain n keep crying when they visited him.

He kept whining and crying when he saw Mr Chong.

He is currently on IV Drip, 2 types of antibiotics, daily debridement and wound cleaning. The vet is charging around rm80 daily (inclusive of hospitalization, IV drip and wound cleaning). He can charge us slightly cheaper if we buy the bandage on our own.

This cannot be forgiven!

We were forwarded this link via Facebook about an abused puppy. We thought that the injuries suffered by Caramel and Sammy Boy was bad. This is worse. This was posted by Brandon on Facebook.

A chinese man carry a box to SPCA Selangor this evening. I am shock seeing the puppy inside the box with more than 50% of its skin burn by hot water. The vet of SPCA recomend ‘to put to sleep’ due to not only difficult to cure, the chances is very, treatment need long duration with high treatment fees. Furthermore, it might make the puppy more suffer. Put the puppy to sleep might one of the solutions to make it release from suffer. Chong, the man found the puppy.

The Chinese man (Chong) told me he found this puppy near a restaurant at Wangsa Permai, Kepong yesterday, and he suspected this puppy belongs to people from JLN Wangsa 2/5 or 2/6. The puppy is wearing a yellow collar.

Deciding whether to rescue of put the puppy sleep make Chong difficult. Seeing such a cute puppy life fall to his hand, this decision will make a big change to the puppy. At last, Chong decide to make a try to treat the puppy, he sent it to a clinic, at Ampang Jaya.

Foods your dog should never eat

Alcohol – Alcohol has the same effect on dogs’ liver and brain that it has on humans. But it takes far less to do its damage. Just a little can cause vomiting, diarrhea, central nervous system depression, problems with coordination, difficulty breathing, coma, even death. And the smaller the dog, the greater the effect.

Onions and garlic – onions and garlic can destroy a dog's red blood cells, leading to anemia.

Coffee, tea and other caffeinated substances - Caffeine in large enough quantities can be fatal for a dog. And, there is no antidote. Symptoms of caffeine poisoning include restlessness, rapid breathing, heart palpitations, muscle tremors, fits, and bleeding.

Grapes and raisin – Consumption of grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure in dogs even with small amounts.

Milk and dairy products - Milk and milk-based products can cause diarrhea and other digestive upset as well as set up food allergies.

Chocolate - The toxic agent in chocolate is theobromine.Consumption of chocolate can cause a dog to vomit, have diarrhea, and be excessively thirsty. It can also cause abnormal heart rhythm, tremors, seizures, and death.

With this, becareful with what you feed your dog with. :)

Visiting Naughty Sammy

We paid Sammy boy a visit over the weekend, and were we surprised to see the little fella recovering so fast and being so active!

Sammy appearing energetic and alert

Apparently,  this escape artist succeeded in running off once last week from the fosterer's house by squeezing through a very tiny hole, jaywalking around the area and keeping just enough distance so that the breathless fosterer in hot pursuit could never reach him. After almost an hour of running and coaxing and bribing with food, she finally managed to corner and pounce on the boy who was obviously enjoying himself. What a naughty fella he is!

Get Well Soon, Ah Wong!

We visited Ah Wong on last Thursday. She has put on some weight & has been eating well.

She just can't wait to go for her daily walk.
Yea, we understand how much she hates being caged in the kennel.

Ah Wong enjoying her daily walk =) Look how happy she is?
She absolutely adores the assistant who walks her daily.

Something to ponder on.

Overpopulation of dogs and cats in Malaysia

It is estimated that about more than 100,000 healthy pets are euthanized annually because there just aren't enough room at the shelters and they simply have no where else to go. In United states alone, 3 to 4 million pets are put to sleep at shelters yearly due to the same problem.

The only solution to curb and control this issue is only by spaying and neutering. Many regard spaying and neutering to be inhumane from the religious point of view or simply some may think it is just not important to spay/neuter their pets.

Spaying and neutering can avoid unwanted pregnancies, births and untold suffering on the streets. it can also lessen the chances of pets having breast cancer and testicular or prostate cancer. This is the only solution to keep the number of cats and dogs from getting out of hand.

The following image will be able to give a better view of the consequences of not spaying your pets.

Spaying/neutering is not inhumane. euthanasia and dumping pets on to streets are inhumane. Spay/neuter your pets today and help control the issue of overpopulation once and for all.

Dinner for Two

Can You Help Caramel?

We thought we have seen the worst with Sammy boy’s wound, but this one certainly far surpassed that - the most disgusting & yucky wound we have ever encountered!

caramel 052

Caramel was found lying motionless one morning with severe injuries, and was rushed to Dr Goh’s clinic for emergency treatment.

caramel 043

The tough cookie is currently on 4 types of antibiotics to fight her infections and also on IV drips.

caramel 051
The skin attaching her tail appeared to have almost detached completely, but she somehow still managed to wag her tail happily when she saw us.

Dr Goh suggested to dock her tail at a later stage as it was pretty badly severed.

caramel 054 caramel 046

Debridement - Dr Goh had to cut off all the dead skin on both her hind legs. She had to undergo two sessions of anesthesia for this surgery. You can clearly imagine her sufferings, just by the mere sight of these heartbreaking pictures.

We had to hold back our tears when we saw her severe wound, extending from one hind leg to the other, with the tail's skin nearly falling off. We could not begin to fathom the tremendous pain she has endured. Fortunately, she is under pain control medication now.

So what actually happened to Caramel?

caramel 055According to Dr Goh, her wound was caused by a dog fight. This girl was probably attacked by a pack of dogs and she suffered at least 40 puncture wounds around her thighs. We actually lost count of the number of wounds on her back, ears, and front legs.

She nearly died of shock the next day as we sent her to the vet. But this tough cookie survived - a real fighter indeed!

How You Can Help?

Caramel's condition truly broke our hearts, and we have vowed to never give up on her even though the medical bill will be costly. We strongly believe that her determined spirit of survival will carry her through this tough time, and we will support her in this tough battle with as much love and care as we can offer.

We sincerely Appeal to the Public to lend a helping hand to Caramel by contributing some much-needed funds for her medical treatment. Every little donation counts, and your support will be significant in helping her pull through this.

This medical bill is estimated to cost approximately RM2000 – RM3000. Her daily medication for antibiotics ALONE would cost RM50+, exclusive of boarding, IV drips, and skin grafting at later stages. She has to constantly fight against infections till her skin fully recovers, which might take up to 10 months. The skin normally grows at a rate of 1~2cm weekly for healthy dogs.

Don’t you agree that Sweet Caramel deserves a second chance in life?

If you would like to chip in / sponsor Caramel’s medical expenses, please find the details as follows:

Confessions of A Brontophobic - Mr. Guinness Stout

We run this posting again as Mr. Guinness has been returned over the weekend. Guinness is a generally brave dog but surprisingly he is afraid of thunder. If he could, he would want to hide himself under a table or seek the protection of a mighty chair during a thunderstorm. Sometimes he even tries to squeeze into really tiny spaces. He would use his paws to cover up his big mega ears and try to calm himself down by murmuring to himself "be a man, it's just a thunderstorm. It's no big deal, I'll get through it."

We are firm believers in "awesome dogs definitely deserve good homes". So we are now doing our best to rehome our awesome Guinness again.

Guiness enjoys car rides. And he only likes taking pictures of his side profiles.

"Hunger was my everyday enemy. Every morning I check my trademark smile in the mirror, put on my best suit (black) and start work at the break of dawn, pacing up and down that familiar road hoping that someone might spare me some of their breakfast leftovers. I really admire Mr Darlie, he's my idol. He's really successful."
