Please Help Sammy With Huge Maggot Wound

A poor, suffering boy with a HUGE maggot-infested wound was just rescued by Sam and is currently undergoing intensive treatment at the vet. We are Appealing for URGENT Funds to help this poor boy, named Sammy. The treatment is expected to last a few weeks, and we would also need the help of a kind fosterer thereafter to care for it while he fully recovers and gets ready for rehoming.

Below is a complete account of Sam's inspiring rescue. Please note that the ensuing photos are a bit gross, so you might want to view them after your meal unless you intend to end up losing your appetite and going on diet.

Night of June 26th:

Injured, suffering & hiding at a corner of Look Out Point
I went to Look Out Point, Cheras last night and saw this poor doggie lying on the grass. I sighed in relief knowing that the dog is still alive but the sight of a huge maggot wound on the back of his neck is gross and disturbing.

After my meal, I tried to feed him with some food and was glad that he was actually eating. Guess he must be starving. With the assistance of Andy, we sent him to the 24hr vet - Animal Medical Centre at Jalan Tun Razak. We shall name him Sammy for the moment as I can't think of any other names now.

The Vet, Dr Kumar mentioned that he is probably an old dog though we couldn't tell the exact age. He is only skin and bones and weighs slightly more than 6kg. The maggot wounds have probably been around for days and it is as huge as my hand on the back of his neck. There are thousands of maggots and anaesthesia might be required in order to remove the maggots and clean up the wound. Dr tested him for distemper and luckily it was negative. Tomorrow he will conduct a blood test to check his liver and heart because his medical condition is unknown and Dr couldn't use anaesthetic if Sammy has liver / heart disease. He is also severely dehydrated and needs to be on IV drip. Dr also noticed that he is limping slightly and one of the front legs is swollen.

Afternoon of June 27th:

The HUGE maggot wound. He's so brave & determined to live
We have sent Sammy boy to Dr Edmund @ Bandar Puteri for follow-up treatment and hospitalisation. Thank you Andy from PetFinder.my for providing ambulance service =P

The emergency hospitalisation on the very first night cost us a whopping RM539!

Breakdown of the bill as below:
RM150 - Consultation fee (emergency)
RM45 - Intensive care services (i.e. IV drips)
RM158 - Wound cleaning
RM50 - Hospitalisation
RM51 - Medication
RM20 - Frontline Flea Spray
RM65 - Laboratory - Canine Distemper Antigen Test

* I will scan & email the actual receipt to all the donors *

Dehydrated & malnourished
Dr Edmund as usual being very optimistic, mentioned that this is not the worst maggots case he has seen and we trusted his professional advice. Sammy boy is probably a 4-5 year old male Pinscher mix by looking at his teeth. He is severely dehydrated and malnourished. Thus we have to put him on IV drip for 2~3 days. Dr Ed had also cleaned his wound once again and cut off all the dead skin / tissues so that the wound could heal better. He is such a brave boy that he didn't whine much when Dr Ed cleaned up his wound. Luckily we picked him up earlier else the maggots might have eaten into his spinal cord as the wound is real deep. Dr is surprised that Sammy is still bright and eating solid food as well.

Dr Ed will also conduct a blood test to make sure Sammy's heart / kidney / other organs are well-functioned. I will keep you all updated on the blood test result. For the 1st blood test, Sammy has very high white blood cells and that probably indicates he has some infection. We have to hospitalise him for the moment as Sammy's wound needs to be cleaned daily and we know that he is in good hands now.

Sammy would need a foster home after 2 weeks once his wound has recovered and suffers no further complications. Please let us know if you could provide a temporary foster home for this tiny pooch.

I would like to URGENTLY Appeal For Funds to assist Sammy. The medical bill just to cure his maggot wound would be really expensive. Please please please give Sammy a chance. We hope each of you would be able to contribute to give this poor doggie a chance to live. Please help us to help the dog. Please spread the word around so that we can source for more funds for his medical treatment.

Once again, A big thank you for your kind donations and helping spread the word. Please contact me to get the account details for donations.

Please lend a helping hand to Sammy boy, will you? He is so brave and determined to survive. Let's do what we can do help him recover well and healthy, then find him a nice, loving home!

You can contact Sam at 012-2900215.

Brave Sammy didn't whine while being treated. He's a real tough boy!

Happy Home for Mei Mei ( now renamed Tammy )

Another happy ending for one lucky furrizen =)

Our grateful thanks to the adopted, SK and Mable for giving Mei Mei a loving and happy Home.

And many thanks to Eileen for your help :D

Very Happy updates from Eileen :

I visited Mei Mei at her new hone in Kota Kemuning last Friday 17 June.

She has been renamed Tammy by her adopter SK and Mable.

She has a new sister, also adopted by the couple early May, renamed Chloe.

Tammy was very shy and reserve the first few days in her new home but was eventually won over by her adopters' love and patience.

They said Tammy is a very good girl and a very alert watchdog. Tammy and Chloe are the best of friends who play together and have fun under the sun.

Here are some pictures. In the last picture, you can see both girls are very attached to SK.How wonderful if all our dogs have happy endings like this.

Little Pony all grown up

Naughty little Pony, back then.

IMG_0229 IMG_0307[3]

She never let her crooked front left leg stop her from having a fun-filled life.. she’s one tough gal, ain’t she ? :D

Pony, now. She is easily recognized, not because of her crooked legs, but because of her cute ears and her constant smiley face =)

Clever Susie

If you ever visited the shelter, you’ll see that it is divided into a few section and each section is separated by a door.

There’s a good reason for this.. it is to keep furrizens that don’t get along well with each other apart so they don’t get into fights.

Thus it is very important for us to always close the doors after us when going into one section into another.

IMG_0265 IMG_0310

This is Susie. She loves visitors and she loves following them around.. and she is very clever!

IMG_0105 IMG_0243 IMG_0242

Figuring out how to open the door… I didn’t think much of this until..

IMG_0252 IMG_0240

I saw with my own eyes how she managed to turn the wooden “knob”, push the door and sneak into another section!

I’m pretty sure there are others in the shelter that knows how to do this too coz there are times when we see other furrizens wandering in the section where they don’t belong to,

but we just assumed that we forgot to close the door. Now we know it’s not >_<

Doggies for Adoption

Received an SOS from a rescuer who's looking for potential adopters for 2 adult dogs. The 2 doggies are good with people and are currently boarding at the Vet's. Anyone who's interested in giving Mr. Brown and Mr. White a home may contact Yan Wei for more details at 017-2048083.

This is Mr. Brown who can be a very good guard dog.

Don't you just love that smile :)

And this is Mr. White who's more docile and good with cats!

Shihtzu for Adoption – 2 years old

Paws Mission received SOS message from one rescuer:

My relative operates a pet shop and one day one indian guy brought a male shihtzu about 2 to 3 yrs
(fur in terrible conditions and blinded in one eye) to her shop for grooming.

After leaving the dog there this man did not come back for the dog.  Now the dog has been boarding at
this pet shop for almost 2 months already.

I have asked her to e-mail me the photo. She told me the dog is very good dog and does not simply bark.

Hope you can help the dog by getting him a new owner

Updates on Merry (part 3)

Received email from Ai Ney on Merry’s Update.

It’s been slightly more than 1 month since Merry’s surgery on her 2 hind legs with severe luxating patella. Her right hind leg, which was more severely handicapped than the left, was operated on twice as the vet wanted to correct the leg as best he could. Sometimes, Merry would be limping with 3 legs, and other times, she walks fine on all fours. Nevertheless, Merry can now walk much better and even run!

Our heartfelt gratitude goes to you for helping towards Merry’s surgery cost. The total bill came up to RM2,650. This is after a huge discount from the vet. There will be follow up visits at the vet’s, with minimal vet fees. We received an overwhelming response from kind people like you who made a generous contribution. The balance amount will be channeled towards the upkeep of Merry and our other rescued dogs, who are awaiting permanent good homes. Their pictures are in the collage attached. Kindly help share it with your contacts.

Julie and I have discussed on whether Merry should be up for adoption. We’ve decided that we would try and rehome Merry. If we can find Merry a good home (we would never settle for anything less), we will then have the space to rescue/foster another dog in need. Should there be no good permanent home for Merry, she will then stay with us. Merry is very lovable and such a manja-pot. Who would have guessed she was rescued from the street! She is also very protective of her puppies and current home, an extremely good dog.

You will find here that we’ve helped Merry designed a Thank You card as a sign of her appreciation. We are sure she would do it herself if she could!

With sincere thanks,
Julie and Ai Ney :)

Watch Merry walk and run after her surgery:

If you want to backtrack and watch how Merry’s legs used to be like:

Another aunty that look likes our beloved aunty Kiew & uncle Wong

We received email from an independent rescuer recently. She told us a story about the aunty which is a dog lover.

Aunty name Angeline whom Iris met few years ago in her neighborhood feeding stray dogs. As years stretched by, she had rescued numerous injured dogs, put them back to health and adopted them through the process. Now she has more than 20 dogs at her home in a rented landed property in KL. She has no choice but to move this coming October as the land had been sold to developer.  She is seeking help to get her dogs adopted and at best to relocate together with her dogs to a new home.  Iris hope through this blog and the extensive network of readers, Paws Mission can help to spread the words. Please do keep in touch with me if you have any knowledge of place in KL where she can rent a landed property where she can move with her dogs (it is ok if attap house).

Iris went to her house this morning to snap some photos. Few dogs are caged, few are roaming free. Angeline cannot tell for sure how many in total she has in her house as she has lost count of number but definitely knows the story of each one.

Anyone would like to help Angeline, kindly drop an email to info@pawsmission.com
