A poor, suffering boy with a HUGE maggot-infested wound was just rescued by Sam and is currently undergoing intensive treatment at the vet. We are Appealing for URGENT Funds to help this poor boy, named Sammy. The treatment is expected to last a few weeks, and we would also need the help of a kind fosterer thereafter to care for it while he fully recovers and gets ready for rehoming.
Below is a complete account of Sam's inspiring rescue. Please note that the ensuing photos are a bit gross, so you might want to view them after your meal unless you intend to end up losing your appetite and going on diet.
Night of June 26th:
Injured, suffering & hiding at a corner of Look Out Point |
I went to Look Out Point, Cheras last night and saw this poor doggie lying on the grass. I sighed in relief knowing that the dog is still alive but the sight of a huge maggot wound on the back of his neck is gross and disturbing.
After my meal, I tried to feed him with some food and was glad that he was actually eating. Guess he must be starving. With the assistance of Andy, we sent him to the 24hr vet - Animal Medical Centre at Jalan Tun Razak. We shall name him Sammy for the moment as I can't think of any other names now.
The Vet, Dr Kumar mentioned that he is probably an old dog though we couldn't tell the exact age. He is only skin and bones and weighs slightly more than 6kg. The maggot wounds have probably been around for days and it is as huge as my hand on the back of his neck. There are thousands of maggots and anaesthesia might be required in order to remove the maggots and clean up the wound. Dr tested him for distemper and luckily it was negative. Tomorrow he will conduct a blood test to check his liver and heart because his medical condition is unknown and Dr couldn't use anaesthetic if Sammy has liver / heart disease. He is also severely dehydrated and needs to be on IV drip. Dr also noticed that he is limping slightly and one of the front legs is swollen.
Afternoon of June 27th:

Dehydrated & malnourished |
Dr Edmund as usual being very optimistic, mentioned that this is not the worst maggots case he has seen and we trusted his professional advice. Sammy boy is probably a 4-5 year old male Pinscher mix by looking at his teeth. He is severely dehydrated and malnourished. Thus we have to put him on IV drip for 2~3 days. Dr Ed had also cleaned his wound once again and cut off all the dead skin / tissues so that the wound could heal better. He is such a brave boy that he didn't whine much when Dr Ed cleaned up his wound. Luckily we picked him up earlier else the maggots might have eaten into his spinal cord as the wound is real deep. Dr is surprised that Sammy is still bright and eating solid food as well.
Dr Ed will also conduct a blood test to make sure Sammy's heart / kidney / other organs are well-functioned. I will keep you all updated on the blood test result. For the 1st blood test, Sammy has very high white blood cells and that probably indicates he has some infection. We have to hospitalise him for the moment as Sammy's wound needs to be cleaned daily and we know that he is in good hands now.
Sammy would need a foster home after 2 weeks once his wound has recovered and suffers no further complications. Please let us know if you could provide a temporary foster home for this tiny pooch.
I would like to URGENTLY Appeal For Funds to assist Sammy. The medical bill just to cure his maggot wound would be really expensive. Please please please give Sammy a chance. We hope each of you would be able to contribute to give this poor doggie a chance to live. Please help us to help the dog. Please spread the word around so that we can source for more funds for his medical treatment.
Once again, A big thank you for your kind donations and helping spread the word. Please contact me to get the account details for donations.
Please lend a helping hand to Sammy boy, will you? He is so brave and determined to survive. Let's do what we can do help him recover well and healthy, then find him a nice, loving home!
