SHE adores animals and would support any initiative that fights for the betterment of animals so it was a dream come true for Miss Malaysia World 2009 Thanuja Ananthan when she was given the opportunity to pose for an ad campaign by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) recently.

Like an angel: Anuja posing for the camera with Nala in her arms.

The on-going campaign is in support of spay-and-neuter awareness and it will be used by Peta Asia Pacific for awareness purposes.

During a recent photo shoot by Kahmun Ho of Myth Studio in Mutiara Damansara, Petaling Jaya, the 24-year-old beauty donned a sexy angel outfit, complete with a pair of white wings, and posed with a backdrop of bright clouds. In her arms was her 14-year-old rescued dog, Nala.

The message behind the ad is “Be an Angel for Animals”.

“That’s what I am asking everyone to do — be an angel for the animals. The idea of this angel ad is to inspire others to be kind to animals.

“As we know the voices and pleas of animals often fall on deaf ears and that’s why creating awareness is important and working with Peta has given me a chance to do just that,” Thanuja said.

Although she has rescued many strays, both dogs and cats, from her neighbourhood in Puchong since she was 10, Thanuja feels that winning the beauty title has helped make her voice heard better.

“Spaying and neutering is important. This way you can save hundreds and even millions of cats and dogs so there are fewer strays.

Spaying and neutering is not difficult or expensive. It’s a humane and responsible thing to do as pet owners,” Thanuja said.

She added that she had two dogs, eight cats, a sugar glider and rabbits at home.

Her dog, Nala, was rescued from a drain behind her house 14 years ago.

Ever since, Nala has lived with Thanuja and her family and has proven to be a good watch dog.

According to a statement released by Peta, an unspayed dog and her offspring can produce 60,000 puppies in six years while an unspayed female cat and her offspring can produce 420,000 cats in just seven years.

An unneutered male cat can father numerous litters.

Peta spay-and-neuter campaign coordinator for Asia Pacific Edward Basse said the ad would be sent to all media agencies and institutions in the next three months as part of its awarenss campaign.
