Dog Selection - Tips For Choosing The Right Dog For Your Family!

With so many appealing dogs to choose from, dog selection can be difficult. Which dog will you choose - a big dog, small dog or a somewhere in-between dog? Think about your available choices with care, because they really wanna fit in.

"Good chemistry" is a must when making your dog selection. Dogs pick up on your vibes and will quickly figure out if they are wanted and loved.

They are pretty good at reading body language which will give away your true feelings about them. Instinctively, they know that pleasing you will lead to being a pampered pet. They want your approval and they want to be accepted.

Dog Selection - Basic Considerations
Is a dog right for you and your family? Before you decide, take plenty of time and give it lots of thought. Have a family meeting to go over the responsibilities of owning a dog. It's really important that everyone concerned realizes what's involved. Moreover, everyone in your household should be enthusiastic about the idea. That way Fido stands a better chance of being a pampered pet.

Healthy dogs live fairly long lives, and they get very attached to you, so think about whether you can confidently include them in your future plans for many years to come.

With a little know-how....dog selection will be a breeze and you'll have no trouble choosing the four legged friend who will best fit into your family and be a treasured pal for years to come.

But don't get trapped by falling for the first cute puppy you see! Taking the time to learn the pros and cons of the breed, will answer questions you didn't even know your had!

Dog Selection - Temperament and Activity Level
Temperament and activity level are two very important factors when choosing a dog. You'll want your dog to be in harmony with the type of things you like to do. If you are a high energy person, or family, and thrive on lots of outdoor activity, select a dog that can keep pace with you.

Before you make your dog selection, think about your reasons for wanting a dog. Is it more for security, companionship, rescuing the abandoned, or do you just love dogs?

If you want a guard dog, consider your lifestyle. Do you have a busy social life with frequent visitors to your home? This might confuse a potential guard dog or at least increase the time it takes for him to sort out friends from foes! Plus, your friends might also be a bit more apprehensive in approaching your pet.

Dog Selection and Your Daily Schedule
Is someone at home most days to take care of a dog, or does everyone have a job? Most dogs are such social beings, they get awfully lonely and even anxious whenever you are gone for more than a little while. Some dogs can go more places, but other dogs left alone may bark or howl endlessly - your neighbors may justifiably be a little put out.

If you can't take your dog with you, think of selecting a dog that is more laid back or perhaps consider two dogs to keep each other company. The other alternative is doggie daycare, but there is a cost involved.

Dog Selection and Your Budget
Taking proper care of a dog does cost money, so before you venture into pet land, do take a look what's involved.

Here are some of the fixed costs:
· Regular health checks
· Vaccinations
· Annual Licenses
· Good quality food - this cost is variable depending on the size of the dog.

And here are some of the other needs:
· A comfy dog bed
· A doghouse - especially in extreme climates
· Leash, collar, food and water bowls
· Grooming
· Microchipping - especially if travelling with your dog

In addition to the regular expenses, most dog lovers like to purchase treats, toys and birthday presents for their dogs.

Whichever dog(s) you select, if they are home alone, just make sure their outside area is safe and they have solid dog houses to give them good shelter and keep them comfortable no matter what the weather. And, by all means leave some distractions...toys, nylabones and even some music, to while away the time till you return.

Dog Selection - Some Final Advice
Space - If you are attracted to the larger breeds, do you have the room? It's surprising how often large dogs find themselves in small apartments or condos. Go figure!

Hair - Some like it long, some like it short, but most of us don't like it on the couch. Do you have a dog-proof house - perhaps wood floors - especially sealed wood floors. And perhaps leather sofas? Definitely something to ponder if you're not too fond of running the vacuum! Also, be aware that grooming needs will differ between the long and short-haired.

Before Selecting a Dog, one final thought..Most of us dog lovers are willing to make many adjustments for our furry friends. We consider the advantages far outweigh any changes we may make to accommodate our pets. However, owning a dog does mean making a commitment for a number of years.

You Are Our Heroine, Sulise

Darling Sulise has joined Ah Wong & Dangdut, gone to Rainbow Bridge on Tuesday night.

DSC01739
I was praying hard that you did not have to suffer much before your last breathe.
You were such a fighter.

When I saw you lying motionless in the cage, with your eyes still opened, you looked much smaller than I could remember

I am sorry that that you had to endure pain for weeks

I am truly sorry that the thought of ‘putting you to sleep’ even crossed my mind as I can’t bear seeing you trembling in pain. Thinking that might be a better option for you

Who am I to determine your life? You were fighting so hard and never, ever give up on yourself yet I secretly wanted to give up on you

I still remember the first time I saw you around my neighborhood. I brought you to my house & you were shivering in fear. Mum asked me let you go as you belong to a neighbor uncle

My puzzlement grew when I saw you were always hanging out with Dino & Jimmy. Two big white, male dogs with a small black pup tagged along, roaming freely, weird huh?

I still remember the times when you never failed to recognise my car when I go back to my parent’s house every weekend

You will jump into my car to look for food and snacks
Oh ya…. you are a sucker for Jerhigh

I remember how you & Dino & Jimmy managed to find out which house I stay in, waited outside my house to ask for food & also some attention. I know all 4 of you were craving for attention & tender, loving, care.

DSC01098Jimmy(Left), Dino (right) & Sulise (not in the pix) waited outside my house, begging for food at 12 midnight.

DSC01554DSC01559
The big brother, Dino & sister, Godiva got adopted a week after brought to the shed.

I still remember how Dino & Godiva bullied you when I fed you weekly. You had transformed from a timid girl to a brave girl now. Even started showing your naughtiness by bullying the smaller-sized pups in the shed.

You were the 1st dog rescued from the pound. April thought of renaming you LUCKY. I wanted to name you MYRA (short for miracle). We have no idea how Fan ended up calling you Sulise.

DSC01634 Been questioning ourselves since then. Should we have sent you back to your previous, irresponsible owner when we were facing lotsa uncertainties? What if we had sent you back to the uncle? You might not fall sick & endure so much pain.

You are such an angel that God decided to you are better off running happily on the rainbow bridge. We knew that God has worked a miracle in you. Against all odds you stayed with us for weeks.

P1020354 You are our heroine. You are our miracle.
We love you dearly, Sulise. R.I.P.

Do You Deserve A Dog?

A dog can be a wonderful addition to your family, as long as everyone is prepared to put in the time and effort required. So many people think a puppy would make a wonderful present for their children, only to forget about them once the novelty has worn off.

Before you make the leap and introduce a new pet to your family make sure you know what to expect and that you are prepared for all the consequences of bringing a new family member into your home.

Some of the things you should consider before you take the step of picking your puppy or dog.

Who is going to be responsible?
It is all well and good to tell your children that the new puppy is theirs to care for, but remember, the first time they have to choose between picking up after it and hanging out with their friends you know there is going to be a problem. So if there is no one prepared to step in and look after the animal on a regular basis perhaps re-thinking the gift would be a good idea.

Do you have room for it?
Depending on what type of home you live in and what type of backyard you have, will be a major factor in both deciding on what type of dog you should get, along with whether or not you are prepared to exercise the dog, if you don't have the room to let it run free in the backyard. If you can't supply the room for a dog to run or are not willing to exercise them on a regular basis then perhaps a dog is not right for you.

Are you a neat freak?
No matter how well prepared you are, or how well you train your dog is, there will be accidents. These can range from the normal potty training problems to digging up your prize garden, chewing your new shoes, or shedding their hair on your lounge. If you are not ready to put up with any of the above at some stage of the dog's life then perhaps a dog is not right for you.

Can you afford it?
Caring for a dog means more than just paying for its meals. While dinner time scraps are a common food source, they need more than that, particularly when they are young and still growing, a well balanced diet is essential. Food is not the only cost though. There are also the worm tablets, vet bills, registration fees and other costs associated with caring for your pet. If you are struggling to pay your bills now you shouldn?t add to those costs, as unfortunately all too often it?s the animal that misses out on what it needs.

These are just a few things to bear in mind when you are thinking about getting a new dog. If, after reading the above points, and now knowing some of what is expected when you introduce a new dog into the family, you decide you still do want a dog, then yes, you do deserve one.

Provided of course you can fulfil one other key requirement.

Being prepared to offer lots of love, caring and patience.

yummy yummy! Lotus has somehow developed the bad habit – biting hands to demand for attention.

Darling Lotus knows her ex-housemates are sick & need some immune booster. So she bought us some goodies – 1/2 dozen of Cod Liver Oil, 6 boxes of Drontal Plus & an Angpau (sponsorship for the vaccinations). Even Lotus knows the importance of vaccinations.
